INEC is biased, If Yakubu was INEC chairman in 2015, APC wouldn’t have won- Amaechi reveals
Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has accused the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, of bias.
According to Amaechi, Yakubu is not comparable to Attahiru Jega, a former INEC boss, whom he describes as a “real democrat.” Amaechi, who appeared on Arise News on Tuesday evening, claimed that if Yakubu had been the INEC Chairman in 2015, the All Progressives Congress (APC) would not have secured victory against an incumbent president.
Jega oversaw the 2015 general election that saw the APC come to power, unseating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government led by Goodluck Jonathan.
Yakubu, on the other hand, was in charge of the 2019 and 2023 elections, both of which saw the APC retain national power. However, Amaechi is among the prominent politicians currently discussing the formation of a coalition to potentially remove the Tinubu administration, and it appears the former minister harbors doubts about the current electoral umpire.
Amaechi stated: “The current chairman of INEC, if he was the chairman of INEC in 2015, we would not have won. May God bless Jega. The current chairman of INEC can only be compared to Iwu.” He elaborated, “When we were to register APC, Jega opened the door and we complied with the registration requirements. He got APC registered. The current man, if you comply with all these, he would not register you. Already, INEC is biased.”
Other top politicians reportedly involved in the coalition conversations include former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, among others.
