2025 Budget: ”Are we installing the sun”- Financial Analyst, Kalu Aja questions N393.29 Billion for streetlights.

Financial analyst Kalu Aja has voiced strong concerns over Nigeria’s proposed 2025 budget for streetlights, which he says totals N393.29 billion.

Reacting to BudgIT’s revelation of National Assembly project insertions, Aja commented on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday that this amount would make Nigeria the “Light of the World.”

Aja specifically lamented the cost per streetlight, which he calculated at an astounding N266 million. He wrote, “With the amount of ‘streetlights’ in this 2025 budget, Nigeria is supposed to be the light of the world. 1,477 streetlights for N393.29 billion, that’s N266 million per light. Are we installing the sun?”

This comes after BudgIT’s announcement last Monday that the National Assembly had inserted 11,122 projects worth N6.93 trillion into the overall N54.99 trillion 2025 budget.

Previous reports have consistently highlighted that successive yearly budgets in Nigeria have included numerous project insertions by the National Assembly that have shown little to no positive impact on the country’s infrastructure.
