When you are out of power, people will not pick up your calls – Former Kenyan Deputy Governor who now hawks firewood says

Former Vihiga County Deputy Governor, Caleb Amaswache, has resorted to hawking firewood in Luanda town to make ends meet after falling on hard times since leaving office. Once a high-ranking official under Governor Moses Akaranga, Amaswache now supplies firewood to local hotels to support his family and pay bills.

Speaking to Citizen TV, he described life after office as extremely difficult, revealing his inability to afford basic needs, including his daughter’s education. “I need a job. I’m appealing to President William Ruto to consider those of us who have served in government. We’re all Kenyans and deserve support,” he said, adding that he needs Ksh.200,000 to restart his life.

All he has left from his political past are framed photos with top government officials, a stark reminder of how quickly power can fade. Amaswache shared that his recent job applications, including for an IEBC Commissioner role, have been unsuccessful.

“My advice to those in power is to respect and protect those who previously served in office. Today you could be in office, tomorrow you could not,” he added.

“When you’re in power, everything looks flashy, everyone respects you, but when you are out of power, that’s when you discover the true reflection of things. People will not pick up your calls because they don’t need you.”
