Tax Bills: We will prioritise support for Tinubu over loyalty to governors – Reps deputy spokesman

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Philip Agbese, has affirmed the House’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, despite opposition from state governors urging their withdrawal.

Agbese emphasized the bills’ importance to Nigeria’s economic growth, stating that lawmakers are united in prioritizing national interests over political pressures, including threats from governors about their re-election prospects in 2027.

The reforms, submitted on September 3, 2024, stem from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms and aim to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system, streamline administration, and boost revenue generation. President Tinubu has resisted calls for withdrawal, proposing that stakeholder concerns be addressed during legislative debates.

Agbese assured Nigerians of thorough scrutiny and amendments to reflect national interests. He expressed confidence that the progressive and intellectually capable 10th House would pass the bills to support sustainable economic development.
