I weep for Nigeria’s democracy. We must condemn this rape of democracy and demand accountability – Adamawa Governor, Fintiri rues Edo election outcome

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has strongly criticized the outcome of the Edo State governorship election, lamenting the state of Nigeria’s democracy. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, as the winner of the September 21 election.

In a statement, Fintiri described the election process as disgraceful, condemning APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje for allegedly violating movement restrictions by flying into Edo State on a private jet. Fintiri pointed out issues like vote-buying, disruptions in the collation process, and inflated voter counts, stating that these actions undermined public trust and attacked the nation’s democratic values. Despite attempts by the APC to discredit him, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the election’s real issues, sharing results from INEC’s official portal.

“I weep for Nigeria’s democracy after witnessing the shameful Edo Gubernatorial poll. The APC’s desperate attempts to discredit me by falsely claiming I announced results won’t distract from the real issue.

“What’s truly shameful is APC’s national chairman flying into Edo with a private jet on election day, defying movement restrictions, while their governors used armoured escorts to intimidate voters.

“This blatant disregard for democratic norms is the real brigandage. Nigerians are outraged, slamming INEC for compromising and favoring APC.

“We must condemn this rape of democracy and demand accountability. The world is watching, and Nigeria deserves better,” Fintiri said.
