”Country hard na fabric First Lady dey unveil” – Nigerians react as first lady, Remi Tinubu, unveils National Unity fabric to be worn on October 1
Nigerians have taken to social media to express their views after the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, launched the OneNigeria/UnityFabric, which she described as a symbol of national unity.
During the unveiling ceremony on Monday, September 16, at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Mrs. Tinubu explained that the idea for the national fabric was inspired by a visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she encountered a similar initiative. She announced that the fabric would be worn nationwide to celebrate Independence Day on October 1, 2024.
Mrs. Tinubu also revealed that local manufacturers will mass-produce the fabric to support the local textile industry, create jobs, and boost the economy.
The launch has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some praised the initiative, others criticized the timing, pointing out that many Nigerians are grappling with hunger, unemployment, and the rising cost of living.
