I get paid N21m monthly, Kano Senator reveals

Senator Sumaila Kawu, who represents Kano South, has disclosed that he earns over N21 million monthly as a senator.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Kawu explained that while his official salary, set by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), is N1 million, deductions reduce it to about N600,000.

However, he noted that additional allowances, such as those for office expenses, newspapers, and local travel, bring his total monthly income to N21 million.

His statement comes a day after RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, clarified that each of the 109 senators receives a total of N1.06 million per month in salary and allowances, amid ongoing debates about lawmakers’ actual earnings.

Kawu said, The amount of salary received per month is less than N1 million. If there are cuts, it comes back to about N600,000. In the Senate, each senator is given N21 million every month as the cost of running his office.
