Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has responded to calls for her arrest for not standing during the national anthem.

In a viral video, Yesufu boldly challenges anyone to take action against her for her refusal. She argued that if anyone should be arrested, it should be President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recalling that he lifted a stick during the national anthem recital amid the election campaign. She also claimed Tinubu “rigged his way into office” and attempted to alter a national anthem that has been in use for over 46 years, asking, “How dare he?”

Yesufu further stated that Nigerians are enslaved by their fear of death, a fear she does not share. She criticized the government for disregarding citizens in decision-making, knowing that people will accept whatever is imposed.

To those calling for her arrest, she declared, “I dey wait for them. We die here. There is no retreat, there is no surrender. This country is our own.”
