Man arrested for marrying off his underage daughter in Anambra state
The government of Anambra State has apprehended Uzochukwu Okoli for arranging the marriage of his underage daughter.
Okoli’s arrest followed a report by his daughter to the State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, alleging mistreatment by her father and the man he compelled her to marry.
The daughter, Chioma Okoli, presently 16 years old, disclosed that after her mother’s demise, her father relocated her and her sister from Edo state to Anambra.
She recounted being coerced into living with a 70-plus-year-old man at 14 years old, before returning to her father’s house, only to be married off to a 34-year-old man named Chinedu Nweke.
Chioma, accompanied by her sister, detailed the alleged abuse she endured from Chinedu, including physical violence and disturbing behavior such as urinating in her mouth, prompting her to flee with their 9-month-old child.
Contrary to her father’s assertions, Mr. Okoli claimed Chioma was either 18 or 20 years old, shifting his stance. Following his arrest, he issued threats against his daughters, expressing his desire for them to suffer and even wishing for his demise in prison.
Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon Ify Obinabo, has directed that the case be prosecuted to ensure justice for the girl.
Both Mr. Okoli and Chinedu Nweke have been detained and will face charges in court.
