WTO DG: Okonjo-Iweala reacts as US declares support for her
Former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has expressed gratitude as the United States has declared it’s support for her as the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The endorsement was according to a statement by the office of the US Trade Representative.
The statement had expressed President Joe Biden administration’s strong support for Nigeria’s former Finance Minister following the decision by the Republic of Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee to end her candidacy.
It said Iweala is respected for her effective leadership and has proven experience managing a large international organization with a diverse membership.
Reacting to this in a tweet via her Twitter handle, Okonjo Iweala thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians for their support.
She wrote:
”Grateful for the expression of support from the US today for DG @WTO. Congratulations to Madam Yoo of Republic of Korea for a hard fought campaign.
“Thank You President Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari & all Nigerians for your unflinching support. Thank you friends. Love to my family. Glory to God.”
