“Stop building prisons and cemetery in our land” – Ogoni leaders tell Buhari
The Ogoni people have asked the federal government to stop the building of prison facilities and cemeteries on their land.
Coordinating Committee of the 25th memorial of Ogoni martyrs made the demand in a media briefing held in commemoration of the November 10 Hero’s Day.
According to Gbeneme Okpae who spoke on behalf of the people, he said they have heard that the Ogonis who demand justice will be locked up in the prison and the cemetery is for mass graves for Ogonis who oppose resumption of oil drilling in Ogoni.
“We call on the Federal Government to stop the construction of a Federal Government Prison and Cemetery in Ogoni as we have been informed that the prison is to lock up Ogonis who demand justice; and cemetery is for mass graves for Ogonis who oppose resumption of oil drilling in Ogoni, he said
“The Ogonis wish to remind all Nigerians and the international community that we will continue to oppose oil exploration and exploitation in Ogoni until Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists are exonerated, and the clean-up of Ogoniland is completed as recommended by the United Nations.
“Twenty-five years after the execution of our hero’s, the Ogoni people want to breathe fresh air now. What Ogoni people want is justice, fairness and equity”, Kpae said.
Instead of building prisons and cemeteries there, the federal government should go and clean up the environment there and allow the people to enjoy the resources God put in their land
if the government is really doing this there should put an end to it
This type of demands are what federal government ought to have responded to without delay but they will be busy constructing what will not benefit the masses.
Does federal government want to put anyone who is seeking for justice, fairness and equity in prison? This won’t solve the issue on ground instead of doing the needful.
When government starts building prison, grave and so on, is this what will benefit people of the Nigeria or that. This government lack focus.
Since when they have flag off the ogoni cleaning yet nothing has been done till date. When you are not ready to take care of the people and the place where you are getting revenue from then who do you want to take care.
That’s what they can do for us na. I don’t blame them
We want good infrastructure and not prisons
Why would FG be doing that instead of executing more beneficial projects for them…
This man is very stupid… He doesn’t know the right time as to when to do something…. Building of prison and cemetry right now is absurd…
Please let him build them,after all he will be the one that will go to prison
I think these people need to be compensated.
Every land belong to God, but God has the representative which is federal government. So every land belong to federal government.
