How To Restructure Nigeria’s Educational System

Most Nigerians older than 30years old have heard stories or even experienced the days when students were served chicken and ice cream. The Nigerian degree was respected all over the world. You did not have to take Standardized tests or any tests proving your ability to speak English.

Fast forward a few years with the military in charge, the standard of educational system began to spiral downwards. ASUU strike became a regular part of our daily life. The system slowly decayed from top to bottom. Our public primary schools are a shadow of themselves. Politicians now send their children to school abroad while middle income earners have to settle for Ghana. According to UNICEF, over 10million Nigerian children are out of school right now.

If the Government is truly concerned about improving the quality of education, there are 2 areas to start from . We need to increase our educational budget. No one is asking that we budget same thing the U.S does but we can try to match South Africa.

The second thing we need to do is leverage technology. If Nigeria is going to meet up with the rest of the world, we will not do it on the blackboard anymore. We will do it by providing access to educational material at a young age. Almost every home in urban and some parts of rural Nigeria have phone, we have to figure out how to use these technology to our advantage.
